Tanya Mykytiuk
Tanya is a pysanka artist in Toronto, Canada who creates art on eggshells using a wax-resist method, in the traditional Ukrainian style.
Tanya first learned to write pysanky as a child and was immediately entranced by the beauty and magic of this ancient art form. She has been writing pysanky for over 40 years and continues to explore pysanka ethnography, new techniques, and styles. She writes on many types of eggs, including chicken, duck, turkey, goose, quail, peahen, guinea fowl, pheasant, partridge, and emu.
Her pysanky can be found at the Canadian Museum of History (Gatineau, Quebec), The National Pysanka Museum (Kolomyya, Ukraine), and the Ukrainian Museum of Canada, Ontario Branch (Toronto, Ontario. In 2019, Tanya coordinated A Celebration of Pysanky — a four-day juried art exhibition for North American pysanka artists at the Ukrainian Museum of Canada, Ontario Branch. Her pysanka design, New Beginnings was selected for the 2024 $20 Silver pysanka coin for the Royal Canadian Mint.
A second-generation Canadian of Ukrainian descent, Tanya’s heritage is an integral part of her identity and contributes to her creative work as a graphic designer and pysanka artist. She is proud to be part of the North American pysanka community and is dedicated to preserving the traditions of pysankarstvo, as well as promoting this art form within and beyond the Ukrainian diaspora.
